VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System - Program Rotations


Program Rotations

The curriculum and rotations are designed to cover Administration/Management, Clinical, and Community areas.

Schedule: Track 1 (DI Only) supervised practice rotations will run from mid-August to Mid-April. Track 2 (Combined DI and master's program) is on hold for 2024-2025 school year.

Orientation:

    Orientation to all aspects of the DI and Supervised Practice Rotations- 2 Weeks

Administrative/Management Rotations:

    Food Production and Service/Food Service Management/Informatics- 3 Weeks

    Administrative Dietitians- 4 Weeks

    Professional Practice- 1 Week

Clinical Rotations:

    Dietetic Technicians- 1 Week

    Inpatient - Medicine (Neurology, Dysphagia, Gastroenterology), Wounds- 3 Weeks

    Inpatient - Critical Care, Surgery, Nutrition Support, Pulmonary- 3 Weeks

    Inpatient - Mental Health- 1 Week

    Outpatient - Obesity, Bariatric & MOVE! Program, Healthy Teaching Kitchen- 2 Weeks

    Outpatient - Primary Care- 2 Weeks

    Specialty Outpatient - Diabetes, Oncology, GI- 2 Weeks

    Specialty Outpatient - Dialysis-  2 Weeks

    Specialty Outpatient - Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC)- 1 Week

    Specialty Outpatient - Enrichment Rotation- 2 Weeks

Specialty Rotations:

    Community/Health Promotion (Whole Health, Outreach, Health Promotion/Disease Prevention, Healthy Teaching          Kitchen, Pediatric projects)- 3 Weeks

Staff Experience:

    Clinical Staff Experience (Inpatient and Outpatient)- 3 Weeks

Program Completion Requirements:

To successfully complete the VASNHS Dietetic Internship, trainees must meet the following:

  • Completion of at least 1152 supervised practice hours
  • Successful completion of all supervised rotations, indicated by preceptor evaluations at the end of each rotation
  • Must attain rating of “entry-level competence” on all competencies
  • Successful completion of all projects as assigned with a passing grade; work will be evaluated by internship director
  • Trainee is expected to meet all professional competencies, standards of professional work, and standards of conduct
  • Must achieve a rating of “competent/entry-level” on the final overall program evaluation
  • All work must be completed, and competencies met within 150% of the 9-month schedule for completion (13 months) for Track 1 program trainees and 24 months for Track 2 program trainees. Track 2 is on hold for 2024-2025 school year.

Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics credentialing agency, will require a minimum of a graduate degree to take the Dietetic Registration Examination. The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System Dietetic Internship will require a master’s degree or admission to the designated affiliated master’s program for application and admission to our program. 

Once the trainee has completed the internship program and the master’s degree, the program will submit paperwork which will afford for the trainee to be eligible take the national dietetic examination. This non-degree program provides a verification statement only and upon receipt of a verification statement of completion of the Dietetic Internship requirements, the individual is eligible to sit for the national RDN examination administered by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR).
