The Hines Dietetic Internship presents the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of settings while working with diverse populations. The preceptors are extremely knowledgeable and provide a tremendous amount of guidance to prepare their interns for any entry-level RD position.

The best part about the internship is the continuous help and support received from the internship director, preceptors, and fellow interns during and after graduation from the program.

-Avery Warwick, Class of 2015

I realized fairly early in this program that I’d made the right choice with Hines VA, and that realization was strengthened all throughout the program, and again after graduation. The level of knowledge, attention to detail, and thorough scope of practice that can be obtained in this program is second to none. You will notice this quickly, as you work with interns from other programs. Don’t get me wrong... it's a very difficult program, and will challenge you physically, mentally, and emotionally. This program is not for everyone, but it can set you apart from the crowd. I’m positive that I have had professional doors open for me because I have Hines VA on my resumé.

Upon graduation, I had a Registry Clinical Dietitian position waiting for me.  I was writing tube feeding orders within weeks, and TPN orders within months of finishing my internship.

I am now a Product Education Specialist for a professional quality nutraceutical company.  Every day, I speak with Integrative Medicine Physicians, Dietitians, and Nurses regarding our extensive product line. I’m sure that the technical training I received at Hines VA prepared me to quickly adapt and excel in this position. I would highly recommend the Hines VA internship as that additional component.

-Mike Grochocki,  Class of 2014

The Hines Dietetic Internship Program was simultaneously one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my professional career. It wouldn't have been possible to accomplish all that was expected of us interns without our fantastic internship director and our incredible preceptors. Their leadership and proficiency were unmatched and, to this day, are qualities I still admire and strive to emulate. After the internship I worked as a clinical dietitian for over six years and later went on to complete my master's in clinical nutrition. I'm currently a private practice dietitian and serve as an adjunct instructor for Loyola University. Hines helped me to lay a solid foundation of knowledge that I continue to build upon. I would without a doubt recommend this program to any aspiring dietitian.
- Hannah Diamond, Class of 2011

My experience throughout the internship has been very positive and I have been impressed by the organization and effort that goes into the internship program. The dietitians, internship director and administrative staff are all so supportive, kind and genuinely care about the interns, both on a professional and personal level. I feel very prepared to start my career in nutrition after this internship.
- Breea Johnson, Class of 2009

The Hines Internship was an amazing experience. The overall program, preceptors, and experiences were exceptional! I look back to the beginning of the internship and cannot believe how much I have developed as a professional clinician. I feel very confident and prepared to begin my career as a Registered Dietitian.
- Amy Kassebaum, Class of 2009

I am leaving this internship with more clarity about who I am and what I want to do with my career because of the diversity of this experience. Not only does Hines provide a wide variety of clinical exposure, we were presented with many workshops, conferences, and personal projects to enhance our professional development. To top it all off, I was able to spend ten months of my life with outstanding preceptors and nine amazing interns in Chicago, IL. You can't beat that!
- Rochelle Kirwan, Class of 2009

Being a dietetic intern at Hines has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. Nine months of intensive hands on learning and excitement brought about new challenges and experiences daily. The passionate, extremely intelligent preceptors created an interactive and fun learning environment. Beyond the vast dietetics knowledge gained, I have created lifelong friendships with my fellow interns and have learned more about myself than I ever thought I could.
- Caitlin O'Rourke, Class of 2009

This internship has been more than I could have asked for. I have grown not only as a professional but as an individual. The hard work and dedication of the preceptors and staff has been amazing and Hines is unlike any place.
- Laura Ritland Samnadda, Class of 2009

It's truly incredible how much you learn during the nine month internship. Hines VA prepares you to become competent and confident in providing MNT and patient care. The preceptors and other nutrition and foodservice staff are all wonderful people who further enhance the learning process.
- Rachel Roggi, Class of 2009

The internship is a delicate balancing act between personal and professional growth. It never stops challenging you to push your limits both inside and outside of the hospital.
- Liz Tofilon, Class of 2009
