Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for requesting information about the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital Dietetic Internship Program. Please review the enclosed application materials carefully. They explain our application procedures and provide general information about our program.

Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is one of the largest VA Medical facilities in the country. It is a large teaching institution that has received national recognition for many areas of medical care. Within this environment and under the guidance of Registered Dietitians, dietetic interns will apply concepts from academia, enhancing their knowledge base and verifying competency in clinical nutrition, food service systems management, and community nutrition.

As a dietetic intern at the Hines VA, you will acquire the skills necessary to pursue a variety of career opportunities in the practice of nutrition and dietetics. Our program is a very comprehensive one in which dietetic interns are actively involved in all aspects of our Nutrition and Food Service.

In addition to Clinical, Food Service Systems (FSS), and Community Nutrition rotations, your learning experiences will be enhanced by weekly classes. Didactic classes on site at Hines VA as well as combined seminars with other internships in the greater Chicago area provide additional opportunities to support achievement of required practice competencies.  A two day review course to assist in preparation for the RD registration exam is also scheduled for our dietetic interns.

Many of our graduates have completed advanced degrees and are employed in a wide variety of positions in many practice settings. Many are or have been active in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as a number of other professional organizations.  We are extremely proud of our graduates! They are working successfully in the profession of nutrition and dietetics practice all over the country. We also have an excellent pass rate.  Over the past 19 years (2000 - 2019), 100% of our program graduates who take the registration examination administered by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR) have passed the exam.  Over the past 11 years (2008 - 2019), 99% of our program graduates have passed the credentialing exam on their first attempt!

If you have any questions regarding the enclosed materials, please contact Patricia Knisley at (708) 202-2728 or send an e-mail to Patricia.Knisley@va.gov. We will be participating in DICAS for applicants to our upcoming class of dietetic interns. The Hines Dietetic Internship Program's class of 2020-2021 will begin on August 17, 2020.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Sincerely,

Patricia M. Knisley, RD, MS, LD
