Application Instructions:

The VA Greater Los Angeles dietetic internship program is using the on-line centralized internship application, DICAS, which may be accessed at  The DICAS contact e-mail is: The on-line application must be completed for our program by February 15. The fee to use DICAS is $45 for the first application submitted and $20 for each additional application.
Applicants who apply to internships using DICAS will be asked to complete a personal statement in 1,000 words or less. We will ask you to answer the following questions (you can disregard questions included in the DICAS instructions that are not listed below):

  1. Why do you want to complete your dietetic internship program specifically at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System?
  2. How have your past experiences helped prepare you to be successful in this dietetic internship program?
  3. What are your short-term and long-term goals and how will training at VAGLA help you achieve those goals?
  4. What are your strengths and what are your areas needing improvement?
  5. For those applying to the combined MS Optional Track, please state which University you are applying to (CSUN and/or CSULB)

To assure the most thorough review of your application and that all components of the application are completed before the deadline, it is strongly recommended that you submit your application 2-4 weeks before the appication deadline.

The VAGLA Dietetic Internship requires only 3 letters of recommendation. When completing the application form, applicants must include the name and contact information (specifically an e-mail address) for each reference. This will trigger an e-mail message requesting completion of a reference form. The form will be completed on-line.

In addition to DICAS materials:

     a. All applicants to the Combined MS track must indicate whether they are applying to CSUN, CSULB or both in their personal statement (see above).

     b. Recent Education Form /DIETETICINTERNSHIP/docs/LA-RecencyOfEdForm.doc. The Recent education form is required ONLY if dietetics coursework was completed 4 or more years prior to the application deadline; check the  date on your Verification Statement indicating DPD completion. If you completed your coursework 4 or more years prior to the application deadline, you must include the completed recent education form and submit it through DICAS (for more information, see below in the "Admission Requirements" section)

     c.  Applicants must also register online through D&D Digital for computer matching and select dietetic internship priority choices by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on February 15. There is a $55.00 computer matching fee.  Applicants applying to the non-degree dietetic internship program track should select code no. 424.

Important Application Notes:

  • If you are a Veteran, please select that option on the DICAS application Personal Information section.

  • When completing your work and volunteer history, please include everything even though you are also submitting a resume. This section of the application asks for more detail than your resume includes. 

  • All DPD requirements must be completed by the internship start date in mid-June. 

Combined Internship - MPH Track:
When applying to the combined MPH DI program track, application materials must be sent through DICAS as outlined above AND to the university separately. Please note the deadline for submitting application materials to the university below.

If you are applying to the Combined MPH Program, you must follow the steps above for submitting your application through DICAS AND apply to the university as follows: 

A.  Applicants must complete the UCLA Application for Graduate Admission with School of Public Health supplement, and also complete an application through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) at  See for a summary of all documents required. Applicants must apply to the Department of Community and Health Sciences, and must put "Combined Internship - MPH Track Applicant" in the header of their statement of purpose

B.  Non-refundable University of California application fee of $120 and SOPHAS fee of $135. 

C.  Official GRE scores must be sent to UCLA by December 1. Please use the Institution and Department codes listed on the online graduate application when requesting that test scores be forwarded.

You must apply to the university separate from applying to the dietetic internship. The deadline for the UCLA application is December 1. The deadline for submitting your dietetic internship application for the Combined MPH Program Track through DICAS is February 15.  Notification of admission to the MPH program does not guarantee a match to the VA Greater Los Angeles Combined Internship - MPH Track. Any questions about the application process to UCLA can be directed to the Student Affairs Office at 310-825-5524.

Computer Matching for the combined MPH program track
Applicants must also register online for computer matching through D&D Digital and select dietetic internship priority choices by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on February 15. There is a $55.00 computer matching fee.  Applicants applying to the Combined MPH dietetic internship program track should select code no. 307.

3.  Combined Internship - MS Optional Track

When applying to the Combined - MS Optional program track, application materials must be sent through DICAS AND to the university separately. Please note the deadlines for submitting application materials to the university below.  Please indicate which university you are applying to in your DICAS personal statement when applying to the Combined Internship - MS Optional Track.

If you are applying to the Combined MS - Optional Program, you must follow the steps above for submitting your application through DICAS AND apply to the university as follows:

California State University, Long Beach:

A.  You must submit a Graduate/Post-Baccalaureate Admissions Application, accompanied by the $55 nonrefundable application fee. You must also submit official transcripts of all college coursework to Enrollment Services/Admissions, CSU Long Beach, 1250 Bellflower Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90840. Check with the specific program for additional documents and requirements.  You can apply online by visiting

B.  Students must concurrently submit applications to the University Admissions and Records office as above and to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.  Application instructions can be obtained from deadline for applications to the Combined program and CSULB Graduate MS Program is February 15.

California State University, Northridge:

A. Applicants for graduate study must submit a graduate application along with all necessary official documents along with the $55 nonrefundable application fee. The following website has application instructions:  Complete the university application online by visiting In order to be considered for the MS in HN, students must apply to both the department and the university. Apply directly to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences through Applicants must meet university requirements and department requirements to be considered for acceptance. Applications must be received by the university and Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences by February 15. Note - the CSUN website may show a different application deadline.

B. After being admitted by the university, your application is forwarded to the FCS Department where the Department Chair/area representative will determine if you meet the admission requirements. (Note: If you have been rejected by the university, the FCS Department will never receive your application.)

Applicants must also register online for computer matching and select dietetic internship priority choices by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on February 15. There is a $55.00 computer matching fee.  Applicants applying to the Combined MS - Optional dietetic internship program track should select code no. 307.

Admission Requirements VA Dietetic Internship:
1. Complete a minimum of a bachelor's degree at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college. 

2. Successful completion of dietetic coursework approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).  The VAGLA Dietetic Internship program does not assess prior learning and does not apply prior learning credit toward meeting dietetic internship requirements. 

3. The recent education requirement below must be met only if DPD requirements and issuance of the verification statement was more than 4 years prior to the application deadline.  In that case, documentation of both recent education requirements below must be provided on the Recent Education Form (link is above).

3a.  Work Experience - Documentation of dietetic related work experience for a minimum of 24 hrs/wk for 50% or more of the time since completion of dietetic coursework. Appropriate work experience may include paid or volunteer work in clinical nutrition positions, nutrition related or non-nutrition related education positions, and nutrition or non-nutrition related management positions. Many positions may be considered dietetics related as long as the skills utilized are applicable to the field of dietetics.

3b. Education - Documentation of recent education can be completed in two ways: 

  • Six semester or 9 quarter hours of dietetics related course work or in areas as identified by the Internship Director.  Courses in Medical Nutrition Therapy and Food Service Systems Management are recommended.
  • Continuing professional education (CPE) credit as follows: 25 CPE hrs for >4 - 6 years post DPD completion, 50 CPE hrs for >6 - 8 years post DPD completion, 75 CPE hrs for >8 years post DPD completion.  CPE credit must be verified with applicant's employer.

4. Grade Point Average: We are looking for a minimum GPA of 3.3 for both professional and science DPD courses. If your GPA is below this, please explain in your personal statement.  If a pre-screening process is required due to an excessive number of applications received, then applications may be disqualified from consideration if calculated cumulative and/or total DPD GPA is less than 3.3.

5. United States Citizenship is required by the application deadline to be eligible to apply to our dietetic internship.

6.  Appointees must be physically and mentally able to safely and efficiently perform the responsibilities of a dietetic intern. Appointees will be subject to background checks and are required to complete a physical examination, which may be at their own expense, prior to reporting for duty. The physical examination must be satisfactory to be accepted into the Dietetic Internship Program. Should the physical examination be unsatisfactory, no part of the expense involved in reporting or returning home can be borne by the Federal Government.  

7.  Federal law requires that most males living in the US between the ages of 18 and 26 register with the Selective Service System. Male, for this purpose, is any individual born male on their birth certificate regardless of current gender. Males required to register, but who failed to do so by their 26th birthday, are barred from any position in any Executive Agency. Visit to register, print proof of registration or apply for a Status Information Letter.

NOTE: To be considered for the Combined Internship - Master's Degree track, admission requirements for both the VA Dietetic Internship and the MPH program at UCLA or MS program at CSULB or CSUN must be met.


Important Dates:

The on-line application must be completed and submitted through DICAS.

Applicants must register with D&D Digital online at and enter their contact information and DI priority choices.

In person or phone interviews may be requested with the top candidates on designated days.

March 30, 2020
Deadline for online reordering. Applicants who registered with D&D DIgital by February 15 can reorder Dietetic Internship priority rankings; however, no additional internships can be added to the list. No changes in DI rankings may be made after 11:59 pm Central Time on this day. If you make other arrangements and will not be able to accept a match that may occur, you must notify D&D Digital in writing of your decision to withdraw from Dietetic Internship matching by this date. The $55 matching fee is not refundable.

April 5, 2020 Notification Day - Applicant matching results will be posted on at 6:00 PM Central Time. Applicants should contact D&D Digital Systems if matching results were not available to them. This is the ONLY source of notification for applicants. Each applicant will receive either ONE MATCH or NO MATCH after Log In. All applicants who receive ONE MATCH will find the matched DI program name and contact information to accept the matched appointment. The MATCHED DI program is planning that the MATCH will be accepted. Matched applicants must contact the DI Program on Notification or Appointment Day to confirm acceptance of the MATCH. No arrangements should be made with any other DI programs.

April 6, 2020 Appointment Day - Matched applicants must telephone the Dietetic Internship Director at 310-268-3120 AND send and email to confirming the acceptance or rejection of the computer match on or before this date. After this time, the program is under no obligation to hold the opening for the matched applicant.
