Loma Linda Program Rotations

Experiences
Orientation
(1 week/32hrs)
4 days of in-person educational classes preparing interns for the internship program.  Topics include introduction to program, policies, facility, Mandatory Trainee Training (MTT), NFPE, Scope of Practice, NCP, recommendations, diversity, equity, & inclusion, informatics, motivational interviewing, & management, communication skills, IDDSI, & Diet Manual.
Food Service
(7.75 weeks /248hrs)
Enrichment Day: education day focusing on regulations, safety, sanitation, menu & recipe development, ordering & receiving. 

Food Service: Intern will rotate through various job positions throughout the kitchen to develop skills needed for operation competency. 
Clinical
(17 weeks /544hrs)
Enrichment Days: 3 different educational days focusing on clinical, outpatient, and critical care providing intern with required knowledge to excel in each area of practice.  

Outpatient: Intern will rotate through various units in the outpatient setting.

Inpatient: Intern will rotate through various units of the medical facility.  Interns will also be required to visit affiliated sites to meet populations not serviced by the VA hospital (i.e. pediatric, and trauma populations).
Community
(1 week /32hrs)
Combined alternate practice experiences that may be done remotely.  Includes employee wellness development, public policy, and community nutrition program research.
Management
(4.25 weeks /136hrs)
Enrichment Day: education day focusing on management scenarios from difficult conversations, healthy work environments, and HR related issues & resolutions.

Outpatient: Intern will rotate with the outpatient clinic managers completing management duties related to quality improvement audits.

Inpatient: Intern will rotate with the inpatient managers completing various HR, and QI duties. 

Food Service: Intern will rotate with the food service RDN supervisors and manager completing various HR and QI duties.

Administrative: Intern will rotate with the NFS chief observing daily tasks and completing budget development.
Staff Relief
(3 weeks/ 96hrs)
Complete daily workflow requirements of a RDN food Service Supervisor, Outpatient and Inpatient RDN with minimal preceptor input.  1 week will be spent in each area following completion of rotations in the respective areas.  
Professional Prep
(1 week/ 32hrs)
4 days of education providing opportunities for exam preparation, mentoring, finalization of the journaling and self-reflection, professional development portfolio development, resume development, interviewing skills, and management skills promoting a transition from intern to professional.

Distance Education
A personal computer/laptop and internet is required for the distance education component of the program as well as research and project completion. Research and projects can be completed at the intern’s residence or at the main hospital/intern office space however due not count towards required practice hours. Rotations, activities, and enrichment days must be completed in person at the rotation site as stated in the program handbook.

Program Completion

  • Completion of at least 1120 hours of practice hours (948 supervised practice hours, & 172 alternate supervised practice hours).
  • Successful completion of all supervised rotations, didactic classes, assignments, and activities indicated by checklists, and rotation completion evaluations at the end of each rotation.
  • Must attain rating of “entry-level competence” on all competencies.
  • Successful completion of all projects and quizzes as assigned. Projects and quizzes will be evaluated by the internship director and preceptor.
  • Intern is expected to meet all professional competencies, standards of professional work, and standards of conduct.
  • Must achieve a rating of “competent/entry-level” on the final overall program evaluation.
  • Maximum time to complete program requirements is 5 years from the intern’s program start date.

Prior Learning Credit
The VALLHCS Dietetic Internship Program does not accept prior learning experiences for credit towards program completion.
