Loma Linda Financial Information

The VA is a non-profit entity and will not collect money from interns therefore there is no application fee or tuition expense. The Department of Veteran Affairs does not provide meals, or housing. Interns enrolled in the DI program will be responsible for expenses of daily living as well as personal internet, laptop, recommended books, association dues, and professional meeting expenses. Loma Linda, CA is in Southern California and does have a higher cost of living compared to other areas of the United States.

Estimated Dietetic Internship Program Expenses: :

Transportation:

  • Interns will be responsible for obtaining a mode of transportation. Public transportation is available however there will be rotations conducted at offsite locations where public transportation will not be available.
  • Interns will be responsible for the cost of transportation to all rotations. This includes fuel (~$4.30/gallon), vehicle insurance (~$600 annually), and any maintenance required.
  • There are no parking fees at any of the rotation sites.

Technology:

  • Home internet is not required but strongly recommended as pre-rotation readings and assignments may be done remotely. If you do not have internet access, you may come into the main hospital to complete these assignments. Internet expenses range from $50-$90 per month.
  • A personal laptop is required and will be needed on specific rotations to complete assigned projects. Estimated cost $100-$900 depending on brand/model.
  • Microsoft office is required. $70 per year.

Memberships, Meetings, Other Supplies:

  • Required membership to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for students: $58.
  • Required and recommended books/references: $100-$300.
  • Student liability insurance: Not required.
  • Professional meetings: $25-$150.

Daily Living Expenses:

  • Rent: $1500-$2000/month
  • Food: $100/week
  • Health Insurance: Optional VA health insurance plans available. Cost varies per plan and is updated annually. Intern is required to maintain health insurance through program completion.

Stipend:
An education stipend is not available for the 2026/2027 academic year. The stipend will vary each year and may be available for future academic years. The website will be updated annually to inform public of stipend availability and amount.
