Stipend Income

The Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) allocates a stipend for VASNHS dietetic interns. The hourly rate is estimated to be $15 per hour, subject to tax withholdings and is paid bi-weekly. The stipend is estimated to be $25,200 for a maximum of 1680 hours. Cost of living during the internship depends upon your choice of living arrangements. The Department of Veterans Affairs does not provide meals or housing. Meals can be purchased in the Canteen Service cafeteria, or lunch can be carried from home. 

Expenses

  1. Application fee: There is no application fee for the VASNHS Dietetic Internship. However, the applicant will need to cover all application fees associated with the Dietetic Inclusive Central Application Service (DICAS).
  2. Immunization and Physical Exam fees: Covered and completed by the sponsoring organization. 
  3. Background check and fingerprinting: Covered and completed by the sponsoring organization.  
  4. VA Parking: No fee to park.
  5. Transportation: Transportation to and from rotations is the responsibility of the intern.
  6. Health Insurance: Eligible for VA health benefits (cost varies based on plan).
  7. Liability Insurance:  Interns are protected from personal liability while at VA healthcare facilities. Additional liability insurance can be purchased through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a student member if interns are interested.
  8. Basic Life Support Certification: Training and certification covered by the sponsoring organization.
  9. Housing: Not covered by the sponsoring facility. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Las Vegas is ~$1550/month.
  10. General internship supplies: Covered and completed by the sponsoring organization.  
  11. Computer laptop: Government furnished laptop for use during the internship program, covered by the sponsoring organization. 
  12. Resources: Access to the Nutrition Care Manual, eNCPT, Evidence Analysis Library, UpToDate, and digital textbooks are provided by the sponsoring organization. Other textbooks, resources, and RDN exam prep is not covered by the sponsoring organization

Tuition

Interns enrolled in the combined Dietetic Internship and Master's degree track will be responsible for the fees and tuition costs at the University of Alabama including additional textbooks and supplies. Graduate Students are eligible for financial aid at the University of Alabama.
