Mission Statement

The mission of the Minneapolis VAMC Dietetic Internship is to train dietetic interns to provide nutritional care and education to the veteran, their families and employees. And, to provide a dietitian who can supervise high quality, cost effective food production and service, provide medical nutrition therapy and be knowledgeable regarding current nutrition research. The internship has a concentration in Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) with approximately half of the rotations providing MNT.


Vision

Nutrition and Food Service employees are dedicated to the growth and development of future registered dietitians. It is through a thorough applicant screening process that interns are selected. It is the aim of the selection panel to select interns who have overall goals and priorities that match with the experiences offered within the Minneapolis VAMC program. This includes an express interest in participating in our program, goals in which our program will help attain and skills which lead you to believe you are deserving of a spot in our internship. This website includes a description of the diverse learning experiences offered in our program.


Program Goals and Measurable Outcomes

Goal #1 - The program will prepare graduates to be competent entry-level dietitians.
Outcome measure:
 a.  85% of the students who enter the internship will complete it. [Currently 100% completion rate]
 b.  80% of graduates will pass the Registration Exam for Dietitians the first time. [Currently 100% first time pass rate]
 c.  Within 12 months of completing the internship; at least 60% of the graduates will have obtained employment related to their field or have enrolled in a program of graduate study. [Past five years is 95%]
 d.  95% of employers will give program graduates a mean rating of "B" on surveys. [Past five years is 100%]
 e.  75% of program graduates will be members of a nutrition related or other professional association at the time of the one year post graduate survey.

Goal #2 - The program will provide a pool of qualified dietitians to the VA system.
Outcome measure:
 a.  20% of graduates will accept a position in a VA facility.
 b.  60% of VA employed intern graduates will remain within the VA system for at least 3 years.
