Combined Dietetic Internship/Master's Degree Program at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

MISSION

The mission of the combined dietetic internship - master's degree program is to prepare competent entry-level dietetics professionals who serve as leaders for the profession of dietetics and are committed to evidence-based practice in the care of veterans and the public.

PROGRAM GOALS

  1. The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center's Dietetic Internship Program will prepare participants with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to obtain professional credentials and enter dietetics practice. This is measured by:
    • 100% of graduates will pass the registration examination within 12 months of completing the program.
    • Over a 5-year period, at least 90% of graduates will pass the registration examination on their first attempt.
    • Over a 5-year period, 95% of students admitted to the dietetic internship will complete the program.
    • All program total scaled scores and sub-scores on the registration exam will exceed the national average.
  2. The program will benefit the VA, other healthcare systems, and the public by producing multi-skilled, competent dietetics professionals. This is measured by:
    • Of the graduates who are seeking employment in a dietetics-related position, 85% will be employed within six months of completing the program.
    • 25% of program graduates will be employed in VA dietitian positions within 3 years of completing the program.
    • 85% of students who respond to survey will rate the value of their internship training as "very good" or "excellent."
  3. To provide a mentoring experience that supports participants in completion of their graduate studies and continues beyond the program. This is measured by:
    • 90% of students who complete the dietetic internship will earn a Master's degree from Texas Woman's University within five years of completing the internship.
    • 85% of graduates will rate with "somewhat satisfied" or "very satisfied" their perception of the adequacy of support provided by the program director.
  4. To provide a learning environment leading to satisfaction with the program. This is measured by:
    • Regarding overall satisfaction with this VA internship, the average score rating is at least 85 on a scale of 0-100 where 100 is a perfect score and 70 is passing.
    • When surveyed, 85% of students would choose this VA internship again if given a choice.
    • When surveyed, 85% of students would recommend this VA internship to other prospective students.
