Information About Rotations

The Dietetic Internship Program is divided into two Phases. During the 17 weeks of Phase I (August -December) students complete four weeks of Foodservice Systems Management. The remaining twelve weeks are divided between Clinical areas such as Medicine, Surgery, and Community Living Center (Nursing Home) and Community areas such as Ambulatory Care Nutrition Clinics, Community Based Outpatient Clinics and Home Based Primary Care.

In Phase II (January - July) dietetic interns complete additional experience in Foodservice Systems Management (5 weeks; 1 week is devoted to field trips related to food and food systems management), Clinical Management (1 week) and rotate over 19 weeks through a variety of Community, Clinical and Specialty areas such as Nutrition Support, Pediatrics and Clinical Research to receive greater depth of experience.

As the end of the Dietetic Internship approaches, students have the opportunity to complete an Optional rotation (3 weeks) in an area of their choice at an affiliating hospital or organization. The final 3 weeks of the dietetic internship are devoted to Staff Experience. Students are expected to demonstrate mastery of entry-level competencies during this time. The length of the program is designed to allow dietetic interns to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to practice with competence and confidence as entry-level Registered Dietitians and to prepare them to rapidly advance to higher levels of responsibility.

All experiences are offered at the LSCDVAMC with the exception of Pediatrics, Clinical Research Center and Optional Experience.
