Student Health Services

According to CWRU policy, all students are required to either have personal health insurance or to purchase health insurance through the University.

Dietetic interns may utilize student health and support services at CWRU including counseling services and mental health services. See the CWRU General Bulletin for details.

Dietetic interns are covered by the injury compensation provisions of 5 U.S.C. ch.81 (MP-5, Part I, Ch.810 "Injury Compensation") which covers compensation and other rights and benefits for injury or work-related illness incurred in the performance of their duties. Outpatient emergency medical and dental care may be furnished to students without charge during a scheduled training assignment (M-8, Part II, Change 15, Dec. 17, 1986, pg. 2-9).

Dietetic Interns are not covered by Civil Service Retirement or Federal Employee Group Life or Health Insurance. They are covered by Social Security (Old Age Survivors and Disability Insurance).

Arriving in Cleveland: Dietetic interns will be asked to release their contact information to fellow classmates prior to beginning the program. In some cases students decide to share apartments to decrease living expenses. Current students are always happy to offer suggestions about where to live and what to do first, upon arrival. Students need enough money to pay the security deposit and first month's rent on an apartment and should have access to funds for books and living expenses for a few weeks. They will receive their first stipend payment on the third Friday after the Program's start date.

Scholarships/Student Loans: Dietetic interns are categorized by CWRU as full-time students and are eligible to apply for scholarships, fellowships and loans from any source for any part of the program. Some tuition assistance from CWRU may be available for the final semester of study.

Scholarships and fellowships are available for interns or graduate students from the American Dietetic Association Foundation. Applications should be requested from:

The American Dietetic Association Foundation
120 South Riverside Plaza - Suite 2000
Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995

Payment of Student Loans: The VA participates in a program that will provide funds to pay student loans for recently hired clinical professionals in hard to recruit/hard to retain clinical professions for each full year they continue to work for the VA. You may be eligible to receive funding over five years to pay qualifying student loans (Ref. VHA Directive 1021, dated May 3, 2002)

Parking and Transportation: There is no charge to park at the CVAMC Wade Park or Brecksville campus. Parking permits may be purchased for designated areas at CWRU.

Dietetic interns are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the CVAMC and to affiliated hospitals. When traveling between the CVAMC Wade Park Unit and Brecksville Unit, dietetic interns may use the Medical Center shuttle service at specified times. A government car may be requested when assigned to travel a significant distance.

Dietetic interns are included under terms of the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA). This provides coverage for injuries resulting from required travel (FPM Chapter 810, Injury Compensations, Subchapter 3, October 1986).
